Idaho has two districts that have historically been split along a N/S line that divides the state into western (District 1) and eastern (District 2) parts. This cycle, the 6-person (3 republican and 3 democrat) commission voted 4-2 to approve a map that divides Ada County in two and maintains the status quo. The two democrats on the commission voted against the map stating that Ada County should not be split. Ada County is home to the city of Boise, the state's largest metro area. This map looks quite different than the adopted map. It splits the state along a E/W line creating a northern and a southern district in order to keep Ada County whole. Instead, to achieve population equality, neighboring Canyon County, on the western edge of the state, is the only county split in this map.
